Easter review and April news

Dear Members

Last Saturday, the wet weather threatened to ruin our Easter Bonnet Day but in true Saturday Strollers style a very good number of ladies turned up to support the event. Fortunately, the weather cleared by noon, allowing play to proceed with reasonable conditions.  Following golf,  tea/coffee and sandwiches were served in the Green room (now blue!) and many ladies paraded bonnets of great style and flair.  Indeed,  the standard was very high and choosing a winner was very difficult.  The winning bonnet worn by Maureen Shannon was a very apt creation of a golf course complete with flags and chickens.  Marian Byrnes was runner-up wearing a lavish creation complete with parrot. Well done to our winners and to all of you.  Thank you so much for your support, it was greatly appreciated.

Match Play is due to start this month.  The list is on the notice board,  so please put your names down if you wish to participate.  A draw will take place for players/opponents for the first round during the month.  Please support and enjoy!

The Spanish Golfer of the Year is due to start on the 9th April and continue on 23rd April and 7th May.  The two highest scoring cards will be submitted from each competition and the two best scores overall will qualify for the Grand Final.

A little reminder  –  the new handicap system will become effective from this coming Saturday, 2nd April.

Happy golfing,

Dolores

SPRING HAS ARRIVED!

Ladies,

It  looks as though Spring is finally here and seems set to continue for several days.  Lets hope the sun shines for our Easter Bonnet Day on March 26th.  Its time to take out the sewing kits and get creative.  We have had some wonderful  bonnets in the past and I’m looking forward to seeing all of your creations.   There is a prize for best bonnet and runner-up.  Results of the Spring Lamb competition will be announced and prizes awarded on the day.  The time sheet is posted on the notice board in the locker room with all of the details.  A selection of sandwiches will be on offer and you may order in advance when collecting your score cards.  Our new caterers will have everything ready when we finish our golf.

The time sheet is very busy this coming Saturday so please be ready to tee-off on time and avoid unnecessary delays during play.

Details of the new handicap system is posted on the board in the locker room and on the website.  Members can familiarise themselves with the system before it goes live on April, 2nd and the committee will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Warm regards,

Dolores

Captain’s notes and announcements

Dear Members,

Thank you so much for the wonderful support and good wishes I received last Saturday at my Drive-in.  Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t kind and the playing conditions were unfavourable.   Even so, our game of Scotch Foursomes went ahead, but I think we were all glad to return to the warmth of the Green Room.  There was a great buzz and sense of camaraderie during lunch and the weather was soon forgotten.  Thanks to you all, I really enjoyed the day and hope you did   too.

I now have the results from the ballot which has been counted by Joyce Mulligan (Handicap Secretary) and verified by Marie Kelly (Vice Capt.).

 Option 1   24% ;  Option 2  19% ;  Option 3   57%

I will be posting details of the new handicap system (Option 3) on the website under “Handicapping” and on the notice board, so that members can familiarise themselves with the new system before it goes  live.  We will be doing trials over the next few weeks and all going well the new system will be implemented on Saturday 2nd April.

Some of you may have already heard that the Green Room will  soon be under new management.  It will be managed by Kate Dillon, owner of  The Wooden Spoon in Blackrock.  I’m pleased to say that some of the existing staff are remaining.  The Green Room will be closed for redecoration on Monday 21st and Tuesday 22nd March and then opening under the new manager on Wednesday 23rd March.  I have spoken with Kate and seen some menus which look very good.  She is very eager and has lots of new ideas, so hopefully we will enjoy the change.

See you soon

Dolores

Captain’s News

Dear Members,

Our away day took place on the 6th February in the spectacular surroundings of Wicklow Golf Club.  The course was challenging, and was made even more so by some heavy rainfall. Nevertheless, our group of hardy ladies pressed on, negotiating hills and muddy conditions! Congratulations to all who took part.

I’m looking forward to seeing you at my Drive-In on Saturday and lets hope the weather will favour  us.  Please assemble at 11.45 am to collect your cards.  The format will be Scotch Foursomes.  The rules are as follows:                                                                                                   Players A + B  tee-off on every hole and the best drive is chosen.  If Player A’s drive is chosen, Player B takes the second shot.  Alternate shots are then taken until the ball is holed.

Lunch and Prize-giving will follow in the Green Room with a wine reception, chicken chasseur lunch and cake, tea/coffee.  If there are any special dietary requirements, please let me know in advance and catering will do their best to provide a suitable alternative.

If weather conditions prevent us from playing, lunch will go ahead at 1.30 pm and there will be a draw for prizes. Lets hope and pray that this does not happen!

Voting for the handicap system will close on Friday, 19th February  so please return your ballot sheet on or before this date.  Our Handicap Secretary, Joyce Mulligan will count the votes  and the result will be verified by another member of the committee.  An announcement will follow before the end of February.

Our society jumper may be ordered from:   Express Embroidery (Par 72 International)                                                                                                               Contact: Liam, 1800925722

I trust most of you have by now, accessed the new website and I am delighted that there has been a very positive feedback.

Best wishes,

Dolores

Welcome to the new website

Dear Members,

I hope you will enjoy the new website.  The intention is to keep you well informed with all the news and events happening within the society.

The season is well underway and three golf competitions  were played in January despite the prolonged inclement weather.  There was tea/coffee and scones served for our first day back in Leopardstown and it was great to see the Green Room come alive again.  There was a great atmosphere and everyone was in good form.

Two out of the five Spring Lamb competitions have also taken place.  Speaking of Spring, let’s hope that there is some nice sunshine on the way as there is a lot to look forward to in the coming months.
